What CiaoSpeak actually teaches
CiaoSpeak is a structured Mandarin course, not an open-ended chat box. A real curriculum — 227 lessons across 16 units — takes you from the four tones and your first "hello" through everyday vocabulary, grammar, and full sentences, loosely aligned to TOCFL levels. A short placement quiz finds your starting point if you're not a complete beginner. Every word, sentence, and story line is voiced in real Taiwan-accent audio, and you can switch between Pinyin and Zhuyin (ㄅㄆㄇㄈ) at any time.
The centerpiece is a proactive AI conversation teacher. It runs real short scenarios — ordering bubble tea, asking directions, talking about your weekend — introduces vocabulary as you go, and reviews past mistakes on its own initiative, without you ever having to guess what to type. Alongside that: a growing library of leveled Stories (dialogues, articles, and chapter series) with tap-to-translate glosses, spaced-repetition review that brings back anything you missed until it actually sticks, and handwriting practice with real stroke-order guides.
Why Taiwanese Mandarin, specifically
Most Mandarin apps default to mainland-standard Simplified Chinese, with Taiwan mentioned as an afterthought if at all. CiaoSpeak is built the other way around: Traditional characters and Zhuyin from lesson one, Taiwan's real accent and everyday vocabulary throughout, not a Mainland course with a translation layer bolted on. See Taiwanese Mandarin vs. Mainland Mandarin for exactly what that difference actually looks like.
What's free, and what CiaoSpeak+ adds
Every lesson is free. Always. All 227 lessons, the spaced-repetition mistake review, and daily Quick Practice never sit behind a paywall, and there are no hearts, energy, or lesson limits — that's a deliberate difference from every competitor we've checked, all of which lock some real slice of their free tier. The optional CiaoSpeak+ subscription ($5.99/month, or $39.99/year with a 7-day free trial) adds on top of that: a much larger daily allowance for the AI conversation teacher, the full Stories library, and unlimited Quick Practice bonus rounds. Nothing you can do for free today gets taken away later.
What's not there yet
CiaoSpeak launched on Android first — there's no iOS version and no confirmed date for one. It's also a genuinely new listing with no review history yet, so if you try it and it works for you, an honest rating helps far more than it would for an app that's been out for years.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I download CiaoSpeak?
CiaoSpeak is live now — download it free on Google Play.
Is CiaoSpeak really free?
Yes — every lesson is free, and stays free. All 227 lessons across 16 units, the spaced-repetition mistake review, and daily Quick Practice never sit behind a paywall. The optional CiaoSpeak+ subscription adds a larger daily AI-conversation allowance, the full Stories library, and unlimited Quick Practice bonus rounds — nothing free today gets taken away later.
Is CiaoSpeak on iOS?
Not yet — CiaoSpeak launched on Android first. There's no confirmed iOS release date.
What makes CiaoSpeak different from other Mandarin apps?
Two things: it's built specifically for the Mandarin spoken in Taiwan — Traditional characters, Zhuyin, Taiwan-accent audio — not a generic mainland-standard course, and an AI conversation teacher actually leads each session instead of handing you a blank chat box.
