How do Mexicans use fresa?
Mexicans call a person, a place or a way of talking fresa when it seems rich, preppy or picky: designer clothes, fancy cafés, a certain upper-class accent. Fresa stays the same for men and women.
-
Mi primo es bien fresa.
My cousin is really preppy.
-
Es un restaurante muy fresa.
It's a really fancy, posh restaurant.
-
No seas fresa, vamos a los tacos de la esquina.
Don't be so posh, let's go to the taco place on the corner.
-
Habla muy fresa.
She (he) talks really posh.
Is fresa an insult?
Mildly. Among friends it's usually teasing; said about someone behind their back, it means "snob". Don't call someone you don't know well fresa; using it about a place (un lugar muy fresa, "a really fancy place") is safer.
| Who you're talking to | Can you say it? |
|---|---|
| A friend, as a joke | Usually fine |
| About a place ("a fancy place") | Fine, casually |
| Someone you don't know well | Avoid: it sounds like "snob" |
What does fresa mean as food?
Outside slang, la fresa is just the strawberry: un licuado de fresa is a strawberry smoothie, and fresas con crema (strawberries and cream) is a classic Mexican dessert.
-
Un licuado de fresa, por favor.
A strawberry smoothie, please.
What do other countries say for fresa?
The same idea is pijo in Spain and cheto in Argentina; elsewhere, fresa usually just means strawberry.
| Word | Where | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| fresa | Mexico | preppy, posh, a bit stuck-up |
| pijo / pija | Spain | posh, preppy |
| cheto / cheta | Argentina | posh, snobby |
How can you practice Mexican Spanish out loud?
Practice it in short, real exchanges, out loud. CiaoSpeak's Spanish course is set in Mexico City: the lessons teach everyday words like ¡Qué padre! with a recording and a note on when to use them, and in the Speak tab a taco vendor, a taxi driver or your language-exchange partner Ana asks you one question at a time. You answer by voice (or typing), and the app tells you whether a person would understand you. Lessons are free; in the Speak tab, today's questions (up to five a day) are free too, and CiaoSpeak+ adds practice in any scene whenever you like. More words like this one: the Mexican slang list.
