What Band B covers

Band B is where TOCFL stops testing survival Mandarin and starts testing comprehension of real material. SC-TOP’s level-correspondence table sets out both levels:

  • Level 3 — 進階級, CEFR B1, vocabulary expectation 2,500 words.
  • Level 4 — 高階級, CEFR B2, vocabulary expectation 5,000 words.

The step up from Band A is the largest in the whole exam: Level 2 expects 1,000 words and Level 3 expects 2,500. Nothing else in TOCFL asks you to more than double your vocabulary to clear the next level.

What score do you need to pass TOCFL Band B?

On the band-based papers, each section is scored out of 80 and both must clear:

  • Level 3 — Listening 46 / Reading 48 (out of 80 each)
  • Level 4 — Listening 61 / Reading 64

On the computer-adaptive version the same two levels sit at Level 3 — Listening 480 / Reading 490, and Level 4 — Listening 555 / Reading 570 on the 700-point scale.

Worth knowing before you register: because the exam certifies whichever level your score actually clears, sitting Band B and missing Level 4 still earns a Level 3 certificate rather than nothing at all.

Why Level 3 is the one people actually need

Level 3 is the threshold Taiwan’s institutions check most often — it appears in scholarship eligibility and in the points systems used for work permits. That makes the lower half of Band B, not Level 4, the practical target for most people sitting this paper. We cover what it unlocks in detail in What TOCFL Level 3 Is Actually Used For.

How many words do you need for Band B?

2,500 words for Level 3 and 5,000 for Level 4 — the point at which vocabulary breadth, rather than grammar, becomes the thing that limits you.

An honest note on where CiaoSpeak currently sits: our curriculum teaches just over 1,000 words cumulatively, which covers Band A thoroughly and the opening stretch of Band B, but is around a fifth of Level 4’s 5,000-word expectation. The app is built to take you solidly through Band A and into the start of Band B — it is not, today, a Level 4 preparation course, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise.

How to prepare for Band B

At this level SC-TOP’s own free sample papers matter more than any third-party approximation, because Band B tests comprehension of longer passages whose style is hard to imitate. They are at 準備考試 → 模擬試題 on tocfl.edu.tw.

SC-TOP also notes that TOCFL and HSK are calibrated differently, with HSK assessed as easier at equivalent CEFR levels — so an HSK result is not a safe predictor of a Band B outcome. See TOCFL vs. HSK for the comparison.
