Choosing the right course

Does Babbel Teach Brazilian or European Portuguese?

Babbel teaches Brazilian Portuguese. Its help center says the Portuguese course “is based on Brazilian Portuguese, with speakers from across Brazil”, and that Babbel doesn’t currently offer a European Portuguese course. Here’s what that means if you’re headed to Brazil or to Portugal, how far the course goes, and the one speaking feature Portuguese learners don’t get.

Does Babbel teach European Portuguese or Brazilian Portuguese?

Babbel teaches Brazilian Portuguese. Its help center says the course is based on Brazilian Portuguese, with speakers from across Brazil, “so you’ll hear a good range of accents as you learn” (Babbel help center). There’s one Portuguese course, and it’s the Brazilian one.

Does Babbel teach European Portuguese?

No: Babbel says it doesn’t currently offer a European Portuguese course. It adds that Brazilian and European Portuguese are mutually intelligible, so you’ll still be able to talk with people from Portugal. That’s true, but Portugal will still sound different at first:

  • Sound. European Portuguese drops many unstressed vowels, so speech sounds faster and more clipped than in Brazil.
  • “You”. In Portugal, tu is the everyday “you” for friends; Brazil uses você.
  • Grammar habits. Brazil says estou falando and me levanto; Portugal says estou a falar and levanto-me.

If Portugal is where you’re going, look for a course built for it: Pimsleur, for example, sells a separate European Portuguese course in the Lisbon dialect, with two levels of 30 lessons (Pimsleur).

How far does Babbel’s Portuguese course go?

Babbel’s Brazilian Portuguese courses go up to level B1, with extra topics up to B2, according to its help center. B1 is the intermediate level where you can handle most everyday situations and talk about your plans and experiences.

What Babbel does well

  • Brazilian Portuguese with speakers from across Brazil, so you hear several accents.
  • Courses up to B1, with extra topics up to B2.
  • Lessons built for English speakers, with speech recognition for saying words out loud.

Where it falls short

  • No European Portuguese course.
  • Babbel Speak, its AI conversation partner, isn’t available for Portuguese.
  • Beyond the sample lessons, you need a subscription.
Speaking practice in Brazilian Portuguese

Answer people in Brazil, out loud.

In CiaoSpeak’s Brazilian Portuguese course, people in scenes across Brazil ask you one question at a time, from the padaria counter to a ride-app car in Rio. You answer by voice, and find out if a Brazilian would understand you.

Can you practice speaking Portuguese with Babbel?

Partly: Babbel’s lessons have you say words and sentences out loud with speech recognition, but Babbel Speak, its AI conversation partner, isn’t offered for Portuguese. Babbel’s help center lists Babbel Speak for Spanish (with British English as the display language) and for French, German, Italian and Mexican Spanish (with American English); Portuguese isn’t on either list (Babbel help center). That’s the real gap for Portuguese learners on Babbel: the part where someone asks you something and you answer in your own words.

What builds Brazilian Portuguese speaking confidence?

Answering real questions out loud, a few every day, builds it fastest. In CiaoSpeak’s Speak tab, a character in a Brazilian scene asks you one question at a time. Rodrigo, a chatty ride-app driver in Rio, asks Você fala um pouco de português?, and Falo um pouco (“I speak a little”) is a fine answer. You answer by voice or by typing, and the test is the one a Brazilian would use: did they understand you? If not, you get one gentle fix, explained in English.

Questions unlock as you finish lessons, so an answer only needs words you’ve learned, and each comes back a few days later. Lessons are free, and in the Speak tab today’s questions (up to five a day) are free too; CiaoSpeak+ adds practice in any scene whenever you like.

Babbel goes a little further in level (extra topics to B2); CiaoSpeak stops at early B1. CiaoSpeak is Brazilian only too, so for Portugal neither app is the right fit. Comparing other apps?
