Choosing the right course

Does Duolingo Teach Brazilian or European Portuguese?

Duolingo teaches Brazilian Portuguese. It has one Portuguese course for English speakers, independent reviews agree that it’s Brazilian, and there’s no European Portuguese option to switch to. That’s good news if Brazil is your goal, and a real gap if you’re moving to Lisbon. Here’s exactly what differs, and how Duolingo’s speaking practice works.

Does Duolingo teach Brazilian Portuguese?

Yes: Duolingo’s Portuguese course is Brazilian Portuguese. Duolingo offers a single Portuguese course for English speakers, and independent reviewers who focus on Portugal say the same thing: Portugalist writes that readers regularly discover Duolingo “teaches Brazilian Portuguese, not European Portuguese” (Portugalist). You learn você for “you”, Brazilian pronunciation and Brazilian vocabulary.

Does Duolingo have European Portuguese?

No: there’s no European Portuguese course on Duolingo for English speakers, and no setting that switches the Portuguese course to Portugal. Brazilian and European Portuguese are the same language, and their speakers understand each other, but if you’re moving to Portugal, a Brazilian course leaves you with differences to learn on your own:

  • Sound. European Portuguese drops or swallows many unstressed vowels, so it sounds faster and harder to catch; Brazilians pronounce more of each word.
  • “You”. Brazil uses você almost everywhere; in Portugal, tu is the normal “you” for friends and family.
  • “I’m doing”. Brazil says estou fazendo; Portugal says estou a fazer.
  • Word order. Brazil says Eu me levanto (I get up); Portugal says Levanto-me.

What Duolingo does well

  • Brazilian Portuguese, the variety most learners outside Portugal need.
  • Lessons that are free, and easy to fit into a daily habit.
  • Speaking exercises for every learner: repeating words, translating sentences out loud and short dialogues.
  • AI video calls for Duolingo Max subscribers learning Portuguese.

Where it falls short

  • No European Portuguese course or setting.
  • The free speaking exercises are mostly saying given sentences out loud.
  • Open-ended conversation (Video Call, Roleplay) is a Duolingo Max feature.
Answer real questions, out loud

Speak Portuguese the way Brazil does.

In CiaoSpeak’s Brazilian Portuguese course, Seu Carlos at the padaria and Rodrigo the ride-app driver ask you one question at a time. You answer by voice, and find out if a Brazilian would understand you.

How does Duolingo practice speaking Portuguese?

Duolingo practices speaking in two tiers: speaking exercises in the lessons for everyone, and open-ended conversation for Duolingo Max subscribers. Its own overview lists exercises that “prompt you to repeat words, translate sentences out loud, or take part in bite-sized dialogues”, speaking-only practice sessions and pronunciation drills for all learners, with Video Call and Roleplay as Max features (Duolingo blog). Duolingo lists Portuguese among the Video Call courses (Duolingo blog), and in January 2026 added a guided beginner call with its character Falstaff, starting on iOS, also for Max subscribers (Duolingo blog).

So the gap isn’t “no speaking”: it’s that the moment where someone asks you something and you have to build your own answer is in Duolingo’s top subscription.

What builds Brazilian Portuguese speaking confidence?

Answering real questions out loud, a few every day, builds it fastest. In CiaoSpeak’s Speak tab, a character in a scene somewhere in Brazil asks you one question at a time: Seu Carlos at the São Paulo padaria asks Quantos pães de queijo? (“How many cheese breads?”), and Dois, por favor is a perfectly good answer. You answer by voice or by typing; if a Brazilian would understand you, it counts, and if not, you get one gentle fix. Everyday spoken forms count too, the way Brazilians really talk: tá for está, pra for para, a gente for nós.

Questions unlock as you finish lessons and come back a few days later. Lessons are free, and in the Speak tab today’s questions (up to five a day) are free too; CiaoSpeak+ adds practice in any scene whenever you like.

CiaoSpeak teaches Brazilian Portuguese too, so it isn’t the answer for Portugal either; its lesson notes only point out the Portugal forms, such as estou a fazer. Is Duolingo Portuguese from Brazil or Portugal?

Brazil. Duolingo has one Portuguese course for English speakers, and it teaches Brazilian Portuguese, with você for you and Brazilian pronunciation. There is no European Portuguese course or setting.

Is Duolingo Portuguese good for Portugal?

Only as a start. Speakers of Brazilian and European Portuguese understand each other, but Portugal pronounces words differently, uses tu with friends and says estou a fazer instead of estou fazendo, so you will need to learn those differences separately.

Is Duolingo Video Call available in Portuguese?

Yes, for Duolingo Max subscribers. Duolingo lists Portuguese among the courses with Video Call, its AI conversation with the character Lily.

Does Duolingo Portuguese have speaking practice?

Yes. Every learner gets speaking exercises in the lessons, such as repeating words, translating sentences out loud and short dialogues, plus speaking-only practice sessions. Open-ended conversation, Video Call and Roleplay, is part of Duolingo Max.
